Gian Maria Morlaiter and workshop
St. Peter Saved from the Waters

1755
Bas-relief
Church of Santa Maria del Rosario ("The Gesuati")

In Matthew 14:25-31 during a storm at sea the Apostles see Jesus walking toward them. Peter walks out onto the water toward him, but his faith falters and he starts to sink. The relief shows Jesus reaching out to save him. Peter is recognizable by both the context and the short, square beard.

Unfortunately, the water on which Jesus is standing looks too much like dry land. Rugolo (154) suggests that the poor execution "reveals the contribution of the workshop."
